PKCH3 - Prairie Kids Chorus - Intermediate Choir (Ages 7-13)
The Conservatory Prairie Kids Chorus is a nurturing choir creating a supportive singing environment where youth will learn to match pitch and discover the joy of singing together.
Our choir is offered in two sections:
- Junior Choir (ages 5-7)
- Intermediate Choir (ages 7-13)
In Intermediate Choir, we advance into more part singing, where students will be split into sections to sing different parts. In addition to weekly rehearsals where choristers sing together (30 minutes), each rehearsal has some entry level musicianship, ear training, and music theory time with the director (30 minutes).
In this choir, we primarily sing traditional choir repertoire, including folk, classical, jazz, and gospel music. This choir is a great option before Music – Private Lessons in voice, as many voice studios do not start until age 10.
Vocal Placement: While an audition is not required to join the Conservatory Prairie Kids Chorus at any level, a Vocal Placement for each student is necessary. This is a one-on-one meeting with the choral director on the first day of class (Monday, September 15) for roughly 7 minutes that helps the director determine which chorus is the best fit for your child and help give students a friendly introduction to the choir. Your exact placement time will be scheduled by our office after September 2. No matter what happens during a Vocal Placement there will be a spot in the chorus for your child! At the Vocal Placement, students will be asked to:
- Sing a short song they know (20-30 seconds, like O Canada, Happy Birthday, a nursery rhyme like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, or whatever your child knows the words to!)
- Sing and repeat with the director (director sings and student repeats)
- Clap a rhythm (director claps a rhythm and student repeats)
- Check their vocal range (how high and low your child can sing)
Did you miss registering before September 15? No worries! We accept enrollments in the choir anytime of the year with vocal placements on an as needed basis.
Registration in the Prairie Kids Chorus - Intermediate Choir also includes an annual retreat (a time for socializing and singing, scheduled during one weekend day during the Fall Term), performance opportunities at events like the Conservatory Group Program Showcase in Darke Hall, entry into the Regina Music Festival choral competitions (a great opportunity to work towards performance goals together), and other performance opportunities as they arise.
If you are ages 16 or older, you can join our Conservatory Adult Choir.
