ENER829 - Nuclear Engineering
This course will cover a broad range of engineering aspects related to a range of nuclear power plant designs, including: reactor neutronics, reactor operations, radiation protection, criticality safety, thermal hydraulics, nuclear fuel cycle, and radioactive waste management.
Learner Objectives:
Fission and Fusion Technologies
Nuclear reactor designs
Nuclear fuel cycle
Reactor Neutronics
Radiation Effects, Shielding, and Radiation Protection
Reactivity and Reactor Operations
Criticality safety
BWRX-300 and e-Vinci overview
Design of Advanced reactor SMRs
Radioactive waste management
The course does not require any prerequisite knowledge about nuclear, but a grasp of grade 12 math would be very helpful (no calculus or differential equations). This course is intended for those looking to position themselves for the development of SMRs in Saskatchewan, including power workers currently working at coal plants, consultants, engineers, or those interested in the underlying operation of SMRs.
Students can either attend class in-person at the U of R main campus or over zoom with 3 hour classes held every Tuesday night this fall.
This professional development course is being offered as a non-credit option, running in parallel with the graduate credit course at the University of Regina. Participants who register for and attend the non-credit section will receive a letter of completion, acknowledging the professional development hours attended. However, please note this non-credit option does not count towards graduate credit or contribute to a degree program.
