Join us for a special 1-day Vocal Intensive to work with highly qualified educators to improve your vocal skills. This is a small group workshop and masterclass for vocal students ages 16+ interested in learning more about a variety of topics while interacting and engaging with other vocal students in a fun, friendly, and supportive atmosphere. This is a peer strengthening workshop to build your support system in your musical journey.

Requirements

  • Prepare One Piece – come to the workshop with one song prepared to workshop over the course of the day. This should be a solo piece. Even though choral students are welcome, we ask that you prepare a solo work for this workshop not one you are studying in a choral setting. For Private Lesson – Voice students, this could be a piece you studied in the fall or are currently studying for festival or another upcoming performance.
  • Repertoire – can be in any genre. A copy of the sheet music will be requested for our collaborative pianist who will be available to work with you in the afternoon session.

How the Day is Structured

  • Morning Session – 10:00am-12:30pm – the morning will contain sessions on music theory, sight reading, ear training, in addition to other musicianship building skills for vocalists.
  • Lunch Break – 12:30-1:30pm – lunch will not be provided, please bring your own food.
  • Afternoon Session - 1:30-4:00pm – students will have time to rehearse their prepared piece with the collaborative pianist before participating in a masterclass. Students should be prepared to sing something with which they are familiar, not necessarily from memory. Together, we will work on stage deportment, character development, interpretation and strengthening confidence.

This workshop is led by Valerie Hall. Valerie Hall teaches in both the voice and keyboard studios of the Conservatory of Performing Arts, with an ARCT in Voice Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Well-known as a musical collaborator, she sings in the soprano section of Ignite Chamber Choir, the auditioned group under the umbrella of Ablaze Vocal Arts Ensemble. For many years, she led her own vocal ensemble, Campion Schola, which specialized in Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony. As a keyboardist, Valerie has appeared in solo and collaborative roles across Canada, the United States and Europe. You can study in Valerie's Private Lesson studio at the Conservatory of Performing Arts.
