Piano Lessons with Stela Popa
Stela Popa brings decades of experience and a lifelong love of music to her piano teaching. Born and educated in Romania, she earned a Masters degree in Piano from the Iași Conservatory in 1973. After moving to Regina in 1983, she discovered Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s approach to music education and was drawn to the core principle that musical ability can be developed in every child with the right support. Inspired by the way children learn their first language, the Suzuki Method introduces music through listening and playing by ear before reading, while emphasizing family involvement and daily practice.
An accredited Suzuki piano teacher since 1986, Stela has continued to deepen her practice through summer institutes and workshops across North America, studying with leading teachers from Japan, the United States and Canada. She served for several years as president of the Saskatchewan Suzuki Piano Teachers Association and remains actively involved with the Regina Suzuki Piano Association.
After teaching at the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions Music Studio, Stela joined the Conservatory of Performing Arts in 2005. She creates a positive, encouraging environment that nurtures strong musical skills, self-confidence and a lasting enjoyment of music. Students are expected to listen to the repertoire and practice regularly to support self-expression and expand their musical vocabulary. By working closely with parents and caregivers, Stela helps establish consistent support at home, strengthening skill development while fostering perseverance and a love of music.
Who should play with Stela?
Age of Student: Ages 4 and up
Skill levels: All skill levels
Genres: Classical, incorporating other genres based on student interest
Expectations: Stela primarily teaches using the Suzuki Method, which is built on a supportive partnership between the student, teacher and family. For younger students, a parent or caregiver plays an active, encouraging role by attending lessons, supporting daily practice and creating opportunities for regular music listening. This shared commitment helps students develop strong musical habits, build confidence and make steady progress.
Stela also teaches in a traditional method where the students take Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) exams. She teaches all grades, including upper levels (Grade 8, 9, 10).
Students are encouraged to participate in winter and year-end Conservatory and Suzuki recitals, music festivals, and can work toward exams if desired.
Supplies Required: Piano (acoustic is preferred), music books, notebook. Optional: adjustable bench and footstool (Stela will advise).
