CJAZZ - Conservatory Jazz Combo
Conservatory Jazz Combo
Ages: 13-18
Led by Carter Powley and Trent Reschny
For High School Musicians
This group is not just for jazz students but for all enthusiastic high school musicians looking to expand their knowledge and skills in jazz musicianship! The primary goal of the Conservatory Jazz Combo is to develop skills in small ensemble jazz improvisation and music theory. Students in the Conservatory Jazz Combo will develop skills in small group playing, improvisation, repertoire development, reading lead sheets/chord charts, leadership skills, arranging, and more!
Students should have at least 2 years of playing experience in their instruments in order to join this group. Prior experience can be in school bands or from private lessons. Any instrument is welcome to audition. This group builds leadership skills students can bring back to their school band program. It is envisioned as an enhancement, not a replacement, for school jazz band programs. The group nurtures and fosters confidence to bring students out of their comfort zones and the small group format allows more opportunities to play and receive individual attention.
Examples of instruments that have applied include but are not limited to:
- Rhythm instruments (percussion, piano, xylophone, drumkit, etc)
- Brass (trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, etc)
- Woodwinds (flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, etc)
- Strings (double bass, violin, cello, viola, etc)
The program cost is approximately $200/term.
Auditions
This group is auditioned to ensure we can put together well-balanced, small ensembles with players in multiple instrument areas and to put students of similar experience levels together. Each section of the program is limited to 10 total students.
