CPIPE1 - Conservatory Pipe Band - 1st Year Students
Ages: 8-20
This course is for NEW Conservatory Pipe Band students. All returning students should enroll in Conservatory Pipe Band – 2nd Year or Higher.
You DO NOT need to be Scottish to participate! The Conservatory Pipe Band has Saskatchewan's most experienced pipe band musicians as instructors and is the only youth pipe band in Regina! Instruction in bagpipes and snare/tenor/bass drums is based on Scotland's Piping and Drumming Qualifications Board guidelines and on the long experience of the teaching staff in this unique music style.
For 1st Year Beginner students interested in Scottish piping and drumming, they start in one of the below instruments and will be split into groups based on interest:
- Practice chanter – this is your beginner bagpipe instrument. A practice chanter is no louder than a recorder or tin/penny whistle - perfect for your child’s practice without the worry of the volume of the bagpipes! Once students have mastered the basics on the chanter they will upgrade to the full bagpipe (typically after 1-2 years of study).
- Drum pads – we have options to learn snare, tenor, or bass drum. All three drum options come with different technique. However, all beginners start on a practice drum pad (a rubber disc for quiet drumming practice) to learn basic drumming patterns and techniques before being supplied with one of our band’s drums (typically after 1-2 years of study).
All students learn basic music theory and a number of exercises and band tunes.
You will select the instrument your child wishes to learn at registration but they can always switch at anytime. You can also select that you are unsure and would prefer an instructor recommendation.
Students eventually join the Conservatory Pipe Band - 2nd Year or Higher group when instructors feel they are ready to join the full 2-hour band rehearsals.
We accept enrollments in this program any time of the year. Contact Student & Instructor Services Non-Credit at 306-585-5748 to enroll after this course has started and your fee will be prorated based on your child's start date.
Materials for the Conservatory Pipe Band will be recommended for purchase from your instructor after you finalize your instrument. Most materials and gear are graciously supplied by the City of Regina Pipe Band.
