CTRC1 - Intro to Trauma & Trauma-Informed Sensitive Practices
The words trauma, trauma-informed, trauma-sensitive, well-being, mental health, and resilience are commonly and frequently being heard in many contexts, and specifically in education. But what they mean, how they get taken up, and what can be done are less explored. This badge seeks to support the participants’ growing understanding of trauma, and how it affects their lives and the lives of children/youth in schools. Each week will examine and inquire into knowledge that is foundational for those who work alongside children in order to support the shaping of trauma-sensitive spaces, interactions, and practices. Foundational knowledge and practical applications of that knowledge will be explored to support participants’ personal and professional growth, which in turn supports the young people they are privileged to be alongside. This course provides educators with access to current research and practical ideas to create and nurture safety and resilience for all on school landscapes.
Learning Outcomes: This course begins with an introduction to trauma, what it is/isn’t, and how it can affect children and youth’s development and learning in schools. Students will understand the ACEs study, understandings of trauma, the brain’s response to trauma, the effects of trauma, culturally relevant and decolonized understandings of trauma, and trauma-sensitive approaches that focus on safety, engagement, belonging, etc.
