Ages 8-12

Young string players are welcome to join the Conservatory Youth String Orchestra and develop their ensemble skills while building lifelong friendships with their peers. This orchestra introduces students to:

  • playing music from a variety of periods
  • working as an ensemble musician
  • improving sight reading skills

Students will generally have at least 2 years of playing experience with the violin, viola, cello, or double bass before joining this group; this program is the next step after students have graduated from the Conservatory Youth Strings Program.

This group is directed by Alaina Majewski. This program takes new players at anytime of the year with the fee prorated. Please contact our Student & Instructor Services Non-Credit Office to get in touch with our director to ensure it is a good time to join (ex: if we are one week before a performance, we may recommend joining the week after).

Listening Session: While an audition is not required to join the Conservatory Youth String Orchestra a Listening Session for each student is necessary. This is a one-on-one meeting with the director on the first day of class (Monday, September 11) for roughly 5-7 minutes that helps the director determine what repertoire we will explore this year and help give students a friendly introduction to the audition process. Your session time will be scheduled after September 5. No matter what happens during a Listening Session there will be a spot in the orchestra for your child! Families should consult with their private lesson instructor about which scales and piece to play. At your Listening Session, students will asked to play:

  • 1 major scale of the student’s choice
  • 1 minor scale of the student’s choice (if possible)
  • 1 piece of student’s choice (up to 2 mins)
  • 1 short sight reading exercise (will be provided at the Listening Session)

Repertoire: At this time repertoire for this year has not been finalized although recommendations of favourite pieces is welcome! Repertoire selected is dependent on enrollment and Listening Sessions in hopes to provide the best learning experience for all students.

Students who graduate from the Conservatory Youth String Orchestra typically continue their studies with Conservatory Youth Orchestra (ages 12-16) or can audition into the South Saskatchewan Youth Orchestra. After age 18, they can join the Regina Community Orchestra.

If your child is new to string instruments and they would like to learn violin, viola, cello, harp, or double bass, they can start in Music - Private Lessons.
